Extended cours/ Description
For the acquisition of the specialist knowledge for radiation protection
experts the radiation protection legislation in Germany requires the
successful participation in specialist courses which are official
recognized.
The course imparts the specialist knowledge for storage and intended use
of devices that contain built-in and enclosed radioactive substances
with activities up to 10E6 times of the exemption limits specified in
the Radiation Protection Ordinance.

- Natural scientific and radiation physics basics
- Human exposure to radiation
- Effect of radiation on people and matter
- Dose terms, dose units and risk considerations
- Radiation protection technology, radiation protection safety and
Radiation protection measurement technology
- Dealing with enclosed sources, leak testing
- Storage, security and waste treatment of radioactive materials
- Practical exercises on dealing with enclosed sources.

The course ends with an exam. Successful participation is recognized
from the responsible authority to acquire the specialist knowledge for
the specialist groups S1.1, S1.2, S1.3, S2.1 and S6.1 with nationwide
validity.

The course is addressed to responsible persons for the handling of
control devices for radiation measuring devices as well as testing and
calibration emitters with activities up to 10E6 times of the exemption
limits specified in the Radiation Protection Ordinance. It also covers
the proper use of gas chromatographs (Ni-63, H-3), the handling of
ionization smoke detectors, the use of radioactive emitters for fill
level and density measurements, Troxler probes and the operation of
systems for generating ionizing radiation. In all cases approval is
required.
